<dc:description xml:lang="en">The fish collection of the Núcleo de Pesquisas em Limnologia, Ictiologia e Aqüicultura (Nupélia) was established in the early 1990eapos;s during a period of vigorous expansion in the research program. Initially it served as a voucher collection for those research projects, but it has continued to grow in size, importance and scope. It currently houses comparative material from many different localities, mainly from the La Plata basin, paratypes of several new species, along with voucher specimens for thesis projects, books and papers published by Nupéliaeapos;s researchers and students. All the material is available for the scientific community. Loans, exchanges, and other transactions have occurred between many different institutions in Brazil and other countries. The majority of the collection is preserved in 70º GL ethanol, but a small set of cleared and stained specimens preserved in glycerin is gradually increasing. The collectioneapos;s geographic representation is Neotropical, but with strong emphasis on the La Plata basin ichthyofauna, including the Brazilian states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo and Paraná plus a few others less represented. More than 5,000 lots of fishes are in the database and we have an estimated 5,000 additional uncatalogued lots. The complete catalogued portion of the collection is searchable using the tool to the left. A section of freshwater ichthyoplankton of the Nupéliaeapos;s Ichthyoplankton lab has been incorporated into the Ichthyological Collection and it can be accessed in the same way. The Collection has credentials of the Conselho de Gestão do Patrimônio Genético (CGEN), according to the deliberation number 137, since February 22, 2006, which was published in the Official Daily of the Brazilian Union in April 4th, 2006.</dc:description>
