The Herbarium of the State University of West Paraná was created in August 1996 by Dr. Bartholomew Tavares, aiming to contribute to the knowledge of undergraduate students . It is one of the few herbaria in the western region of the state whose primary role is the maintenance of a comprehensive collection of regional flora. The Herbarium UNOP - Algae was separated in March 2013 , in order to include species of algae , fungi , lichens and algae briófitas.As samples are collected using plankton nets and after registration of the sample in herbal these are stored in liquid medium using Transeau solution. Currently , the herbarium UNOPs - Algae has registered mainly representatives of Charophyta , Chlorophyta , Bacillariophyta , and lichen fungi and bryophytes.
